Umicore
Umicore Finland Oy
Umicore is a global advanced materials and recycling group. Kokkola is home to a highly automated hydrometallurgical refinery. It is the largest cobalt refinery outside China and a significant part of the European battery value chain as a manufacturer of cathode precursors. The cathode precursors processed in Kokkola are converted into active cathode materials at Umicore’s other cathode production facilities, which are used in lithium-ion batteries, mobile devices, and electric vehicles. Safety and respect for the environment are always a priority, as is the ethical sourcing of raw materials such as cobalt. We are the first company in the world to be certified for responsible sourcing of cobalt (RMI certification).
From history to the future
Our production began in 1968, and our roots lie in the Outokumpu Group and the manufacture of cobalt, cobalt-based powders, and chemicals. We have been part of the Umicore Group since 2019. Approximately 400 professionals work in various positions in Kokkola. Our own research and development department, pilot plant, and extensive laboratory also enable us to develop our own high-quality products. We have also successfully designed, implemented, and launched new production lines under the leadership of our own skilled personnel. Today, 100% of the electricity we use is renewable energy.
